NECINA 2021 Technology Conference

ALL THINGS Electric Vehicle

A group of experts from different sectors of the electric vehicle industry

will serve as panelists to discuss their views.

About This Event

WHY ELECTRIC VEHICLES?

While many of the US cities are still recovering from the damages brought by tropical storm Ida, it is apparent that such an unprecedented disaster must be attributed to global warming. No doubt, gas powered passenger cars and heavy-duty trucks, among others, are a major source of the greenhouse gas pollution that causes this environmental threat. In an effort to quickly respond to this issue, President Joe Biden announced a new national target that electric cars should make up to half of all new car sales in the United States by the year 2030.

In addition to cars, other electric vehicles including land vehicles, such as e-scooters, and aerial vehicles, such as drones, have gain popularity over the years. More and more people ride e-scooters for daily commute, while more and more industries rely on drones for inventory management and product delivery. Due to their electric nature, electric vehicles own the ancillary benefit that powerful computing devices are built in from the get-go. Accordingly, much better control systems oftentimes network-enabled can be implemented for electric vehicles to achieve functionalities beyond the imagination of gas-powered vehicles.

Most importantly, the driving force behind every electric vehicle, namely its batteries, has been developed to have advantageous properties, such as, longer life span, fast charging and discharging, extremely safe, lightweight, to name only a few. Consequently, electric vehicle developments have become the mainstream of the 21st century technology and undeniably will change people’s life for good.

NECINA YES 16.0

Coaching For Success

Overview

Founded in 2005, Youth Entrepreneurship Service (YES) Program is a program designed for high school students to learn entrepreneurship and leadership skills through interactive workshops with instructors and out of class mentorship by mentors. Students are taught and motivated to discover their passion in science, technology, business and philanthropy, explore opportunities and recognize fundamentals of startups.

YES adopts the approach of Project Based Learning. The structure of all sessions encourages students to learn by applying the knowledge and skills through an engaging and interactive experience with instructors, mentors and peers. From the 10-class workshops, students learn to choose teammates, work in teams, develop business ideas and participate in a business plan contest. Students will select their own teammates based on an exercise and evaluation that determines their respective personality propensity. The program will cover Business Plans, Product Conceptualization, Company Structure, Finance, Sales and Marketing, Public Speaking and Presentation skills. Each session will be facilitated by an instructor who introduces to students a specific entrepreneurial skill or characteristics and guides them to apply these concepts to their chosen business projects. The Project Based Learning approach presents students with unique opportunities for deeper learning in-context and for the development of important skills tied to college and career readiness. Winning teams voted by a judge panel will not only win cash prizes but may be awarded internship opportunities by corporations.

5G Conference Recap - 10/19

New England's China Information Network Association's "5G Technology Conference" began with current President Harry Gao offering opening remarks. Wufu Chen providing the keynote speech. Other sessions include NECINA Board Member and PTC Vice President Ben Tao's Fireside Chat with M/C Venture Partner Brian Clark on "5G Trends and Investment Landscape". Vice President of Parallel Wireless, Yang Cao spoke about "5G Technology and IoT development ". Red Hat's CTO, Huamin Chen talked about " Introduction of key developments in 5G, IoT, and MEC ".

In the Keynote speech, Wufu Chen, the founding president of NECINA, told the audience that 5G technology will lead another paradigm shift in networking industry. However, due to the need for massive number of baseband to support its operation, the development and deployment of 5G technology will be a gradual process. Countless business opportunities for 5G networks that target specific needs will emerge.

5G is the next generation of cellular networks. Beginning in 2019, 5G services are being launched everywhere. People are expecting 5G to be much faster than 4G and its average download speed should be 1GB per second. However, the 5G service launched, such as by Verizon in Rhode Island, did not give people the impression of lightning speed, low latency and super data processing capability that 5G promised.Wufu Chen said that 5G technology will allow artificial intelligence to perform to its extreme in a closed environment. Activities that use real-time computing of big data, such as autonomous driving, deep machine learning, etc. could be realized.

Chen Wufu believes the Internet industry is entering another paradigm shift, including computing speed, storage capacity, network availability, intelligent Internet of Things (IOTs), security, and virtual computing, storage, Network and terminal equipment, etc. But most importantly, artificial intelligence with big data machine learning capabilities has replaced a large part of the human brain function, which is more subversive than the industrial revolution that replaced manpower.

To support these multiple functions, the 5G architecture must change dramatically. Due to the high data rate and the physics of signal transmission that shortens the distance, the number of base stations have to be increased significantly. To avoid out of control costs, the base station functions should be divided into several levels to allow sharing of valuable base station processing resources.Wufu Chen believes that in the foreseeable future, people should not expect homogenous 5G networks, because the cost is too high to be practical. Conversely, there will be specific 5G networks developed to meet different needs.

In the Q&A session, Wufu Chen pointed out the startup opportunities that will come along with the emergence of 5G technology development will include RU Antenna array technologies with beam forming, DU technology and its management, CU with slicing, End to end applications adaptation layer, Edge computing, Small cell applications, 5G and Wifi 6G integration, Wireless local loop, Industrial 4.0 applications, etc.

Wufu Chen himself is currently helping a friend in raising a fund to invest and support 5G-related startups.

What is 5G?
5G technology is about next-generation cellular network. Starting in 2019, 5G is being launched across the whole world. With the cutting-edge technology and modern research, 5G are able to offer connections that are multitudes faster than current 4G connections. It is expected to have an average download speed of 1GBps. Although the dramatic speed improvement is an outstanding feature of 5G technology, its impact goes far beyond just speed, providing a wide range of innovative changes such as Internet of Things, where 5G acts as the infrastructure to make transporting large amount of data available and hence a more connected world.

Key Features of 5G

  • Faster Speed - 5G is said to be much faster than 4G and some are saying like 100 times faster. This would mean the ability to download a full HD movie in under 10 seconds on a 5G network

  • Lower Latency - We'll see much less delay or lag when we're using our phones and other devices. With 4G networks, latency is typically around 40-50 milliseconds. With 5G it should be 1 millisecond or less, which is undetectable to the user.

  • Greater Capacity - 5G will be able to cope better with many high-demand applications all at once - from connected cars and IoT (Internet of Things) devices to VR.

Why Do You Need to Care About 5G?

5G as one of the hottest topics out there have overwhelmed various kinds of technology media and it is being discussed at every corner by all kinds of people in the world. Public has been getting used to the lightening development of Network and Mobile Communication technology. 4G has been around for more than 10 years, it is time for a breakthrough. Besides, thanks to the trade war between US and China, Huawei, who does research and development of 5G technology, has been pushed to the cusp of general opinion. With regarding to that, 5G has been considered as a possible industry for China to step ahead of the world, or even lead the world.
